Vitosha
is the most visited Bulgarian Mountain. It is famous as
the cradle of hiking tourism in Bulgaria.
Vitosha is a typical dome-like mountain - one of the few
in Bulgaria.
It rises immediately above Sofia and is
one of the symbols of our capital, a huge granite mass with
wooded lower slopes.
Few are the big cities in the world, and capitals are even
fewer, that possess such a natural advantage.
It is treated by the people of Sofia as part of the capital,
indeed it can be reached quickly either by car or public
transport. Many people come to walk and to savour the peace
and quiet and mountain air.
Skiers are well-served by Aleko, Bulgaria's
highest ski resort, where the season lasts from
December to late spring. The slopes being mainly northfacing
retain their snow and rarely become icy. There are several
very steep and challenging runs as well as ones suitable
for intermediates and beginners.
There are marked trails for walkers, who
can admire wild flowers or the unusual natural phenomenon,
the moraine, an apparently dry river made up of massive
boulders.
To visit
Vitosha gives the uncomparable advantage of being in the
7000 years old capital, the second oldest
city in Europe, and at the same time enoying the first anounced
national park on the Balkans ( 1934), the
longest cave in Bulgaria, huge flora
variety, unique stone river, 290
km alleys in the park, 6 ski-runs
with 13,6 km length, cabine lift, 4 seating
drags, 7 stationary ski drags ..
