| The
small picturesque town of Koprivstitsa is
situated in a valley along the flow of the Topolnitsa river,
surrounded by beautiful mountain hills. It was founded at
the end of XVI century and managed to remain a pure Bulgarian
town during the ottoman oppression. The unique atmosphere,
the preserved Bulgarian revival architecture makes Koprivstitsa
a museum town. It is pleasure to walk between the wooden houses,
little coble streets or visit one of the many museum houses.
Nowadays one can stay in a private hotel named after the heroes
from the April Revolt.
If you get there at the time of the traditional folklore music
and singing events, you will experience unforgettable moments. |
Since
1965, Koprivstica is the cradle of the National Festival
of Bulgarian Folklore. It is held every 5 years
and turns into on of the biggest folklore events in the country.
On that occasion, thousands of singers, players of musical
instruments, dancers, and performers of ancient rituals, rites
and work practices gathered in the lovely Voevodini meadows
near Koprivshtica.
It is a real triumph of old Bulgarian traditional culture
and one can hardly describe or understand it unless joining
the event in the meadows. |
